This is one of the hardest things I have ever faced, yet it cannot compare to what Kathy must have faced. You never expect this sort of thing to happen to someone you know, yet here we are, in an unreal situation that we need to realize has happened and now we must move forward. A lot of sadness, a sense of emptiness, maybe wondering "what if", or "if only I had done this". But there is nothing that can change what has happened.

I met Kathy back when I was a senior in college working my first summer at the Forestry Sciences Lab. Over the 21 years I have known her, I have grown to consider her not just a co-worker, but a friend. Not many days went by when we did not have some conversation. Her grief at the loss of her dog Sadie, the loss of her close friend in Florida, the struggles faced by first her brother being sick then passing, then her mother's struggles. Maybe on the outside she showed a strong face, maybe sometimes with a touch of anger, but from some of our conversations I know she cared so deeply and loved her family so much.

Nearly all of my memories of Kathy, or "The Sween" as we often called her are full of laughs. My most recent memory was asking her if she had ever seen "Deuce Bigalow Male Gigilo" the movie. She had not, so we played a clip on youtube of the part with Amy Poehler...I think tears came to her eyes as she listened and laughed. I was going to lend her my copy of this movie. Back several years ago we would talk about Seinfeld episodes and even in recent months we would still laugh and scream "Stella!!!!" like Elaine did in the episode where she took muscle relaxers. Kathy loved to laugh. So many things will remind me of her. We talked a lot about the "good old days" at the office and I think by sharing stories we kept some the fun alive that we had with folks who have retired or moved on to other jobs. Our group has changed a lot in 20 years at the research lab, but the stories live on and stories about Kathy will live on too. Of course, everyone didn't always get along, but that is human nature.

Sometimes, especially recently in the last year of so, we would talk about faith. Kathy was developing quite a respect for Mission Covenant and their work as God's hands and feet with her family by both Brian and the congregation there. An expression of love that only comes from God. She knew that was the source and I hope that in the face of such a horrible end she was able to cling to and trust the source of that love.

We may wonder how an all knowing and all powerful God can allow such horror to happen. Why does He not intervene with His power? It is a question contemplated throughout the ages. The unfortunate answer seems to be that in a fallen world where there is sin, bad will happen. When it does it is always hard to face. We must not blame God, but instead remember Him. He gave us a Savior, whose birth we celebrate right now, so that we may know that after we are gone from this life, there waits for us a room in His Father's house where we will be received unto Him.

In my mind I can see Kathy there without any pain. Her knee is fine, not swollen and painful. There are no allergies, no worries and fears. In that sense, though she is gone from us...the murderer did not win! Kathy's spirit lives on! I will miss my friend. I am sad. But in this I find a bit of relief from my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sweeney family and to everyone else that knew her and mourns!

Learning of this tragedy was hard and so unexpected. We've recently discussed everything that was happening with her family, and how everyone was handling the loss of a brother and the health challenges of the other family members. No matter what she was going through, she always took the time to ensure I was ok.

Her strength is something I have admired over the years I was blessed with her friendship. We would laugh, we have shared some tears. I looked forward to the emails; they kept me going on those tough days. Who will I share my dating woes with?

My thoughts and prayers got out to Sween’s family. I know we are feeling the loss; however my belief tells me I will see my friend again.

I will always love and miss you Sween.

Your forever friend, Vanessa “Vanna White”

I knew Kathy Sweeney as a kindred spirit when I worked at the Warren Forestry Sciences Lab. I retired over 10 years ago, but every time I returned she gave me the warmest greeting and the biggest hug. She was a true friend and I will miss her and her verve, but I will keep her alive in remembrance.

A Paraphrased Irish Lament

"Kathleen Mavourneen! awake from thy slumbers
The blue mountains glow in the sun's golden light,
Arise in thy beauty, thou star of our night.
Mavourneen, mavourneen, our sad tears are falling
To think that from thee we must forever part."

Lamentation from Look Homeward Angel by Thomas Wolfe

"O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again."

You are lost, but not forgotten, Sween.

My Dear Aunt Kathy~ The special relationship we had makes this so difficult. I beg for clearer memories because we shared so many amazing times together, and I want to see them more vividly than I am able. You were so beautiful to me. You cared so deeply for me my entire life, and shared that same care with my family, especially your "Doodles", Carter & Brady!

I'm sorry for the sadness you carried. We all go through so many tough things in our lives, and I'm so far away out here that I was there for you the best I could be...I really didn't truly know...

Thank you for your beautiful laugh, and being the Aunt Kathy that I'll remember. Thank you for all of the great care you gave Craig & I, and all of the wonderful things you did for us growing up. My heart is full of lovely thoughts of those times.

I'm sorry the Lord chose to take you this way, but I thank him for saving you, and I look forward to the day I get to be with you again.
All my love~and the love of my family~Amy

I worked with Kathy at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Irvine, PA from August, 2004 through April, 2006. We had a lot of laughs together during that time and I still recall some of the "nicknames" we had for each other (the "Sween" and "Johnny Cat" comes to mind and still makes me smile).

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sweeney family. Rest in Peace Kathy in the Lord's House. You are gone from us but will never be forgotten as you will live in our hearts and minds always.

First and foremost, You will always be loved beyond belief. I want to thank you for all the things you did for us when we were children and even adults. For some reason Sweeney would love to take me and my brother Chris, but to her she called him "Poop Stain and I was Lovey. She would take us places with her and even take us where we wanted to go. I can remember being in her Subaru and we would be singing to her Hootie and the Blowfish or Diamond Rio.
To this day I wonder why she wanted to do things with us 2 little heathens and why she loved us so much. But I am so glad she took the time for us. She was like an aunt I never had. I still laugh at the things she would let us get away with (My mom wasn't pleased) but I will always have those memories and her laughing and smiling and our songs we use to jam out to.
Every time I seen Sween I was sure to get a "HEY LOVEY", huge hug and kiss on the cheek. She would always ask about Chris and Jadyn. I am so privileged to have had those times with her and to be loved by her. She is one that I knew she genuinely and deeply loved us and nothing can take that away. Sweeney may you rest in peace and the angels take good care of you. You will forever be in my heart and memories.

There are no words to express my feelings. Denial didn't work. Now horror has set in.
There should have been a sitcom titled "Sween". Seriously. Kathy could take the most mundane situation and turn it into something wildly hilarious. While her sense of humor was legendary, she was also a very caring person. I am having a really hard time thinking that I will never hear that laugh again. There is a huge void in the world as we know it that will never be filled. Safe passage, my friend. You are probably making St. Peter laugh right now. Love and miss you forever.

Aunt Kathy, We will miss you so much. Sneaking popcorn into the movies, picking out pumpkins at GG, smiles, laughter and fun times shared will be somethings that we hold dear. To me, my greatest memory that truly reflects your kind and loving spirit came just a few months ago, in the final days with dad. You lovingly gave him a manicure and visited with him. You were so very pleased that you could do something for him and your joy was contagious. It was a shining moment for us all. We will miss you. We love you,

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you...and give you His perfect peace.

Dear Sweeney Family,

As a vendor to the Irvine USDA for 7 years, there was no job that didn't go well with out Kathy's input. She was the foundation of sucess for me at the USDA Irvine location. Talking about life and love, her church, family, sisters, her parents, her allergies, sharing a smoke and that lovable Subaru she drove all are glued to my memory of her. We at Kepa Services will not be the same and she will never be forgotten. Please read the atached prayer.

Comfort For Those Who Mourn
by Marianist Mission

So many people see in death nothing but a cruel separation from loved ones. Even good and religious people make that sad mistake. In death there is certainly the very real pain and sorrow of physical separation. But it is equally true that our loved ones remain with us. They do not just go off to some dark and distant place. They simply continue into eternal life. We do not see them because we are still in the darkness of this world. But their spiritual eyes, filled with the light of heaven, are always watching us as they wait for the day when we shall share their perfect joy. We are born for heaven and we end this life of tears to begin our life of endless happiness.

I have often reflected upon this beautiful truth and found it the greatest and surest comfort in time of mourning. A firm faith in the real and continual presence of our loved ones has brought the conviction and consolation that death has not destroyed them, nor carried them away. Rather it has given them life!, a life with power to know fully and to love perfectly. With this new life and new power our loved ones are always present to us, knowing and loving us more than ever before. The tears that dampen our eyes in times of mourning are tears of homesickness, tears of longing for our loved ones. But it is we who are away from home, not they! Death has been for them a doorway to an eternal home. They are still with us, lovingly and tenderly waiting for the day when we, too, will enter the doorway of our eternal home. It is such a mistake to see death as separation and nothing more. For us who believe, death is a preparation for eternal union with those we love, in the peace and joy of heaven.

Although I do not know Sween's family, I'm sure a part of all of you shone through her in her life and zest for living life to the fullest. She could create fun in any situation, and sometimes it was even appropriate. :-). I have wonderful memories and will cherish them always. Sween will remain a kindred spirit and accompany we river enthusiasts on our many adventures as we lazily float down the Allegheny enjoying nature and the scenic beauty that she loved so much. Sympathy goes out to family and friends, she will be remembered by so many and truly missed.
